I think the governments of these regions obviously need to cooperate in order to regain control over this serious issue. They must elect representatives and have a meeting in order to discuss options for convicting and eliminating this large piracy problem, that is affecting all of them. I think they desperately need to come up with a plan in order to take the "pirates" down. I think international cooperation is a great thing, ideally, but it won't work as planned. There will be a lot of contrasting ideas and opinions between the regions. I feel more problems will occur from this alliance because it just isn't realistic to believe that an alliance between all of these different regions, with different beliefs, will work successfully.
The governments in these regions should form some sort of international alliance to combat piracy. The governments in these areas could create some sort of agency/bureau that could be primarily involved with interoceanic protection against pirates. This bureau/agency would not only alleviate the problem with pirates, but it would also provide employement for the countries with failing economies. IF this were to happen, then countries like Somalia might experience some economical developments and might therefore establish some sort of properly functioning government. The problem between international cooperation is the possibility of conflict. Since many countries would be cooperating together, conflict between ideas and political aspects might possibly arise. Twenty-first technology has affected this "New Age" piracy by providing more advanced technology for communication and more hostile means of weaponry. This technology has in actuality improved piracy to be more successful and dangerous.
I completely disagree with anyone who believes that the piracy is worth it because it brings countries together. I recently saw a program on The History Channel about this, and in it they had some people who were on a ship that was attacked by these pirates. The terrible experiences that people on the ships attacked by pirates have to go through isnt worth the positive effect of governments working together. It's too big of a price to pay for such little result.
I think the article should have been called "The Pirates of the Somalia". It seems hard to believe that there are still pirates and they are capable of hijacking ships. How is it that they cannot be captured; a pirate ship should stick out like a sore thumb in the ocean. Things like satellites, radar, something should be able to do something.
1. The governments need to work together to solve the problems. It cannot just be one government's responsibility because people in all different countries are being affected. The only way the problems in this region can be solved is if the governments WORK TOGETHER!

Some of the advantages could include insider information about different ships leaving port in different countries but, there is also the disadvantage of having people from countries that are in conflict with each other, so the "pirates" may not get along as well, which could negatively influence their corporation.
3.Technology must have affected piracy a lot because there are instruments to tell how close/far ships are, better maps and ways to tell what the weather is, like where there is supposed to be a big storm.

It is hard to believe that pirates still exists and it is pitiful that this problem was not taken care of sooner. These regions must elect officials who meet much like our congress, to agree on a fair solution to piracy.
2. Usually, more is accomplished in numbers. If these regions work together, it will be easier to enforce new laws and punishments for piracy. However, it is also possible that these regions will not agree on a fair solution to piracy and may end in discrimination or cruel and unusual punishments.
3. New technology has definitely affected advances in piracy. Pirates are no longer restricted to swords and guns, but more complex weapons. Also advanced computers can be manipulated in order to shut down security systems.
1. The gov should get and use new technologies, even for fisherman so in case of attack people can be told via the radio. That way, the pirates can get caught and hopefully save lives. The fisherman and the gov. can help eachother that way.

More problems will occur from the alliance if people do not catch the pirates because more money and good will be lost.

I do agree that the governments of these regions should try and cooperate to resolve this issue. They need to try and stop these pirates from attacking ships by coming up with some kind of plan. There might be disagreements and conflicts on some issues but they can all compromise and find some way to solve this prboblem. The new technology has definatly affected this "New Age" piracy because there are more advanced weapons, communication devices and other complicated new things that can allow piracy to be more dangerous.
To fend off the attempts of the pirates of Somalia to hijack ships traveling across the Indian Ocean, the governments in the regions should obviously cooperate. They should form policing units from each of their individual navys that would patrol the areas around the regions (in cargo boats similar to the ones being hijacked) and report back at any disturbances. They could also arm the ships that leave to trade.
The advantages of international cooperation are that countries are tied together by the threat of piracy. Also, the cooperation allows for greater success towards protection from piracy. The language barrier of the different regions is an issue that will occur as well as the cultural differences.
The 21st century technology of guns, such as the AK-47, has made the pirates all the more dangerous. However, the satellites, radars, and communication methods, such as radio signals, should have made it a lot easier for the pirates of Somalia to be caught and stopped. It simply astounds me that pirates still exist to this day. I was under the impression that piracy (the age of plundering ships) was gone and replaced with a new sense in the word (downloading music and such).
Working together is the popular choice, and the best choice, because unifying forces will make local governments forget about their differences and make them work together. In some ways, the piracy actually is beneficial, however hard it is to believe.
Current technology can go both ways. The firearm advancement is a problem, because the governments can afford the guns, but the other side can get the weapons as well, turning the whole problem into a 2 sided battle over who can be more technologically advanced.
However, if taken into perspective, the "pirates" are actually, in their own view, good. They hijack these ships for a living, in a sense. If they don't steal a ship, then they won't have any livelihood.
Referring back to what jeffrey said about the uniting of the local regions: ok, assuming that they all form a big coalition of defenses, and eventually, destroy the pirates. What next?
1. Strengthen the security measures on the ships that may be targets. Maybe they can allow special protections [such as the police] on those ships with valuable cargoes. Also, a good communication system will definitely help -- have ships contact local government if there is a possibility of an attack.
2. Advantage: more resources. Disadvantage: a sense of competition. I don't really see the disadvantage causing huge problems though, so I guess it's definitely better with international cooperation.
3. Technology enabled the pirates to efficiently control the ships that they hijacked...it's really sad. Technology was designed to help us lead a better life, yet it can also supply people with ill intentions.

1. The countries in the area should cooperate and have a police force ready to help any ships that are attacked. The ships could also be more heavily armed to make them less venerable to piracy. Better communication and radios would also help the issue.

I believe that technology has advanced enough for effective radios to be put on all ships and piracy should not be this successful.
It is interesting to see that although the world has shrunk with all the new technology,some practices have remained the same, and adapted to the New Age. The governments of all the countries affected should, of course, cooperate, but this cooperation should be carefully planned. In an international problem such as this one, some countries might prefer to handle things their own way and creating more rivalries than cooperation. However, these piracy acts need to be completely eliminated, and as soon as possible. The last thing we need is the spread of these piracy acts, particularly now that the economy is so bad.
I find it slightly amusing (although this is clearly a serious matter) that this practice of piracy still exists in our day....I understand how malicious these acts are, and yet at the same time (being safely confined in my little corner of the world), it is hard for me to fully understand the gravity of the situation. Piracy is a practice that has been over-glorified by pop culture and by Hollywood.
It is necessary for nations to band together to battle against piracy. Unlike clearly defined national borders, the waters of the world are shared among many. The responsibility to keeps these waters safe falls into the hands of all of these regions.

I think that a naval guard for the important ships along with patrols of the waters would be the best way to alleviate the piracy. The pirates must be shown that these actions will not be tolerated and that we live in a time where they cannot get away with these fantastical games.

advantages are support of the country, however with the enemies of countries being everywhere, we can easily, to put it in simple terms.. Piss people off.
3. How do you think 21th century technology has impacted this “New Age” piracy? I think that it has become alot easier for them. we don't have to deal with cannons and such anymore, so any 10 man crew with automatic weapons can easily overpower a civilian ship.
The existence of pirates is hard to believe. The victimized regions should work together to find a solution. These regions select representatives to get together and vote on the correct policy. The advantages include access to information about he sailing trips that ships from different countries have. It would also be easier to get resources. The disadvantages being that money might be lost.
